So you’ve tried the ‘cold turkey thing’ and it just hasn’t worked. You’ve realised that you need some sort of help to quit. CONGRATULATIONS! You're on your way.
The next question is: ‘WHAT DO I CHOOSE TO HELP ME QUIT CIGARETTES?’
It can be a real dilemma and pretty bloody confusing right? You got your mate Joe who quit with patches, it worked for him, but he didn't smoke as much as me. And the lady at work used Champix to quit but she had a bunch of crazy side effects. Then there’s Phil, your drinking buddy who quit with the gum but somehow loading your body up with nicotine in a different way just doesn’t seem to make sense to you.
And then there’s all the hype about e-cigarettes. You ask yourself; 'could it really work for me or not?', 'are they safe?' Who the hell do I listen to? I got no idea, I’m confused. Whatever, time for a smoke.
I’m not one to mix my words and I’ve been known to call a spade a spade so let me give it to you straight right here. The answer to the first two questions above is:
‘YES’ and ‘YES’!!!
Firstly, if ANY aid has ‘worked’ and helped anyone at all quit, then the simple fact is, it can work for you. When it comes to quit smoking aids, the answer is simple. They will ‘work’ to the degree of COMMITMENT you have to becoming a non-smoker! PERIOD! NO aid will ever give you commitment. YOU have to have that FIRST. The more you have, the more that aid will seem like a 'silver bullet'.
I hear a lot of smokers say; ‘I’ve tried everything and nothing works’. And I ask; ‘why do you think that is?’ If they’re being honest, they tell me that they just didn’t really want to quit. Their heart just wasn’t into it or they were quitting for someone else or for the wrong reasons etc.
The fact that people CAN quit cold turkey AND DO SO every day is simple proof that it’s a PSYCHOLOGICAL BATTLE mostly, not a physical, biological addiction to nicotine. But this doesn’t mean that traditional NRT’s are worthless. I’m not saying that at all. What I am saying is that if you don’t have the right mindset – don’t bother even trying.
The second question above that I answered ‘YES’ to is the question of 'are they safe?’ Now, you might be asking yourself this because of all the media, fuss and kafuffle around e-cigarettes at the moment. I see the articles every day questioning whether they ‘really can work’, 'are they safe and effective?' And there isn’t enough ‘research’ on their ‘long term effects’ and BLAH BLAH BLAH.
I’ve already addressed the ‘can they work for me’ thing as mentioned above. Of course they could work. But now let’s just stop and think logically about WHY there might be all this media hype and fuss trying to discredit, discourage or even warn us against the use of e-cigarettes.
FACT: The Pharmaceutical industry is a US$300 BILLION dollar a year industry with HUGE political and media influence. NRT’s form a significant chunk of their profits. Since e-cigarettes are NOT regulated, this means that any small to medium sized company can produce and sell them to any convenience store. This is OBVIOUSLY going to reduce big pharma profits. Do you think they like this? Of course not! It’s for this very reason that they are attempting to persuade governments to treat them as ‘medical devices’ which means that e-cigarettes would have to undergo the very time consuming and EXPENSIVE process of medical trials; something only big pharma can afford. This would literally kill all smaller manufactures of the e-cigarette overnight knowing full well they don't have the financial resources to meet ‘medical marketing’ requirements.
Furthermore, there is another completely ridiculous fact to point out here. It makes me laugh when a ‘study’ trying to discourage the use of e-cigarettes (or any other kind of non-regulated therapy or natural treatment for that matter), highlights ANY tiny or even potential ‘negative effect’ of that treatment. If they find one, they will inevitable point to it saying THIS is why it should be regulated (or even banned). HOWEVER, let’s look at the side effects of Champix shall we. They include:
- Difficulty concentrating
- Flatulence (farting like a trooper)
- Sleep disturbance (difficulty sleeping or abnormal dreams)
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
Now you tell me, does this sound like a ‘safe’ method of quitting cigarettes to you?
It seems to me that it’s not a question of ‘safety’ but simply a question of ‘whose selling it?’ If it’s a pharmaceutical, it’s labelled as a ‘side effect’. If it’s ANY ONE ELSE, it’s a reason to ban it or regulate it. Hm . . smell a rat here? I sure do!
So what’s my point?
My point is, don’t listen to all the crap you hear on TV or see in the papers because chances are they are in some way connected to and working for the continued profits of some HUGE corporation that WANTS you to buy more stuff you really DON’T NEED!

70% of smokers want to quit smoking but just don't know how.
Perhaps you've tried to quit a few times and since you didn't get the result you were after, maybe you've lost a little hope that you'll ever be able to stop smoking. Don't trick yourself into thinking that one person may have the will power, but not yourself. Will power isn't something that you either have or not, it's something that can be developed. And THIS is exactly what a good quit smoking therapist is able to do for you.

The fact that SO MANY people can and DO quit cold turkey is proof that it can be done. But it's it interesting that you HARDLY EVER see anything in the main stream media promoting NATURAL ways to quit cigarettes and stop smoking? I sometimes wonder why that is. It seems that these days the media seems to be the 'marketing department' of drug companies.
Why do i say that?
Because often the media seem to spend a lot of thier time either telling us all the stuff we ALREADY KNOW about how bad smoking is for us. OR, they waste thier time comparing all the Niccotine Replacement Therapies (NRT's) out there buy letting us know about the latest 'scientific research' about one method over the other.
Here's why I think they do this.
It's to basically promote and market certain types of drugs which leads to more sales for drug companies.
As you can image, I keep a pretty close eye on articles and media and it shocks me HOW LITTLE information there is out there for smokers to help them quit ON THEIR OWN! Especially in the mainstream media.
The fact is that the media is unlikely to sing the praises of any NATURAL ways to quit cigarettes because the drug companies WILL NOT benefit from natural ways to quit smoking.
My messgae here is simple. DO NOT let the media brain wash you into thinking that YOU'RE A DRUG ADDICT, because you're not! You have a powerful PSYCHOLOGICAL dependency NOT a physical one and a psychological dependency CAN be broken with psychological techniques which is exactly what I help my clients with.
