10 Tips to Reduce Stress & Anxiety

Hi there,

Having been a Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist and counsellor for many years now if I had to name one of the most common underlying causes for people coming to see me, it would be STRESS (or it's more extreme version - ANXIETY).

The world of today is so demanding. We are being expected to DO DO DO MORE MORE MORE and QUICKER QUICKER QUICKER. And if you can't keep it all together - BOOM! You could blow a fuse and most of us have probably been there right?

Any GP or health professional will tell you that the most detrimental thing the body can experience is STRESS. It's the number one cause of most illness and disease. Even word itself is telling us 'DIS – EASE', unease is just another word for stress.

So if this is true, it makes total logical sense that anything you can do to calm down and relax is almost like medicine for your body, mind and spirit.

When it comes to unwinding and unplugging there are obviously two ways to do this; one is via healthy means and the other is via unhealthy means. Let’s face it, most of us probably calm down at the end of the day with a glass of wine (or three), some ‘comfort food’ (or lots of it), or maybe even a cigarette.

All these methods may well make your brain release a quick and immediate endorphin pleasure rush or ‘relaxation’, but we all know what feeling usually come after that; shame, guilt and regret. So it can be really helpful to start to get into a practice of doing some simple things regularly that can help you to relax, unwind and find your inner peace and calm.

Here are 10 things you can do to deal with stress, anxiety and create more centred peace in your life:

  1. Take a moment to practice mindful slow breathing. Sit in a comfortable quiet place, close your eyes. Breath in for 5 seconds, hold it for 1, then breath out for 5 seconds. Do this 10 times.
  2. Do some sort of exercise. It doesn’t have to be strenuous, even a short walk or some simply yoga can do wonders to clear the mind.
  3. Spend time in nature; a bush walk, the beach, a park, a lake.
  4. Spend time with animals or children as both live in the moment.
  5. Take up a relaxing hobby or activity; gardening, bike riding, painting, drawing or become a member of a social group using something like ‘Meet Up’.
  6. Take a meditation class for beginners or just light a candle and stare at a naked flame while concentrating on your breath.
  7. Drink plenty of water and spend at least 15 minutes a day in the sun.
  8. Listen to relaxing music, an inspirational speaker.
  9. Become your own counsellor by asking yourself; ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’, ‘Can I be more adaptable here?’, ‘What action can I take now to improve this situation?’, ‘Who can I call?’, ‘What could be the hidden lesson for me to learn here?’, ‘What character trait am I developing here?’
  10. Become a little more mindful of your diet and try to eat lighter foods more regularly whenever possible.

Although some of the above tips may seem very simple and obvious, please don’t underestimate how effective they can be if you’re willing to actually DO THEM!

However for more severe types of anxiety sometimes we need to seek the assistance of a professional. Hypnosis and Neuro linguistic Programing is extremely effective at addressing the deeper causes of stress and anxiety that you may not even be aware of. Most people feel an immediate positive difference after just one session.

Be well, be calm.

Cigarettes: How Can This Stimulant Be Relaxing Me?

It’s paradoxical isn’t it? We all know that cigarettes can’t possibly be calming the body down because it’s a stimulant. So why does it FEEL like it is?

On the one hand, we know that any stimulant, as the name suggests, is stimulating the body and the nervous system and when this is happening you are increasing the body’s alertness and agitation. When this is happening on a biological level, your body is anything BUT relaxed. Most you probably already knew this.

I’ve been helping people quit smoking cigarettes with hypnosis for over 8 years now. Almost every smoker I have ever seen will tell me that they use cigarettes when they are stressed and they smoke to ‘calm down’.

So how is this so? How can it be calming me down?

It is basically because of the MENTAL ASSOCIATION that a smoker has with cigarettes. If you have a conscious (or subconscious) association to cigarettes being ‘calming’, then this is the corresponding chemical that will be release by your brain just after you take that first drag, and then, ‘ahhhh . . . ‘, you’ll have the feeling of relaxation, even though your body will be stimulated at the same time. This is more proof of the power of your mind over your body.

Your conscious and subconscious mind is so powerful, that it can create more overpowering biochemistry and the effect of the stimulating cigarette. It’s also the endorphin rush of pleasure that a smoker can feel after that first drag which can also play a powerful role in maintaining this connection to cigarettes. Even if you’re at the point of hating cigarettes, even if you’re NOT enjoying them anymore. Your subconscious mind has made this connection and unless you address this deep seeded connection, you’re always going to find it harder to quit smoking than it really needs to be.

Are You Saying to Yourself: 'I want to quit smoking but don't know how?'

70% of smokers want to quit smoking but just don't know how.

Perhaps you've tried to quit a few times and since you didn't get the result you were after, maybe you've lost a little hope that you'll ever be able to stop smoking. The important thing to remember is that becoming a healthy non-smoker is a process and it deserves your full attention otherwise you probably aren't ready.

If you're really committed to quitting then you should be equally committed to the preparation that's involved in quitting. Although there are many stop smoking aids out in the market these days, the simple fact is that NONE of them are going to do anything for you unless you have the right mindset FIRST! But you see, the media will continually try to confuse you by publishing all these news stories about a study here and a study there investigating the effectiveness of one NRT over another.

I say what's the point? If there is even one person who can stop smoking naturally without any NRT then this is simple proof that IT CAN BE DONE and if one can do it, SO CAN YOU.

Don't trick yourself into thinking that one person may have the will power, but not yourself. Will power isn't something that you either have or not, it's something that can be developed. And THIS is exactly what a good quit smoking therapist is able to do for you.

The most important thing is that you don't give up on trying to give up otherwise you'll NEVER give up, and that's a guarantee.

Help Me Quit Cigarettes Naturally

The fact that SO MANY people can and DO quit cold turkey is proof that it can be done. But it's it interesting that you HARDLY EVER see anything in the main stream media promoting NATURAL ways to quit cigarettes and stop smoking? I sometimes wonder why that is. It seems that these days the media seems to be the 'marketing department' of drug companies.

Why do i say that?  E-Cigarettes as a Cessation Tool: Fact of Fiction?

Because often the media seem to spend a lot of thier time either telling us all the stuff we ALREADY KNOW about how bad smoking is for us. OR, they waste thier time comparing all the Niccotine Replacement Therapies (NRT's) out there buy letting us know about the latest 'scientific research' about one method over the other.

Here's why I think they do this.

It's to basically promote and market certain types of drugs which leads to more sales for drug companies.

As you can image, I keep a pretty close eye on articles and media and it shocks me HOW LITTLE information there is out there for smokers to help them quit ON THEIR OWN! Especially in the mainstream media.

The fact is that the media is unlikely to sing the praises of any NATURAL ways to quit cigarettes because the drug companies WILL NOT benefit from natural ways to quit smoking.

My messgae here is simple. DO NOT let the media brain wash you into thinking that YOU'RE A DRUG ADDICT, because you're not! You have a powerful PSYCHOLOGICAL dependency NOT a physical one and a psychological dependency CAN be broken with psychological techniques which is exactly what I help my clients with.

Have you seen other 'Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minutes Specialists promising you a 95.6% Chance that you will become a non-smoker for the rest of your life after Just ONE SESSION?

Well, I'€™ve met and I know many of these so called €˜Specialists€™ and I also know where most of them got their training. I know this because I did the same course until my conscience kicked in. That's when I decided to become an actual BOARD CERTIFIED HYPNOTHERAPIST.

I know I'€™m running the risk of being hounded by those €˜Specialists€™ out there for spilling the beans here, but I just don’t care about them, I care about the integrity of Hypnotherapy. The fact is that thanks to stage shows, the movies and TV, there are enough people out there with misconceptions about hypnosis already without 'Specialists' out there adding to the mix.

But more importantly than all that, I care about you GETTING THE FACTS and getting a superior professional service from a real Hypnotherapist who understands that quitting cigarettes, something you'€™ve probably been doing for many years, isn't just about coming in, filling out some forms, having a small chat, doing 20 minutes of hypnosis, walking out the door after 1hr with nothing but a Red card with the '€˜specialists'€™ number on it while they say €˜call me if you need me€™.

What I have just described above is EXACTLY what many '€˜Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minutes Specialists' are doing.

How do I know this? Because that'€™s what I was trained to do when I did that course.

When I asked why we were being specifically told NOT to follow up with our clients, you know what they told me?

'You'€™re a specialist and specialists don'™t follow up with their clients'€.

Even though that might be true, that made me wonder about another thing which lead to my next question to them which was:

'How can you expect us to truthfully promote a €œ95.6% Success Rate' if you are telling us NOT to following up? Where did this figure come from?

And that'€™s where the um's, ah'€™s, bullet dodging, smoke and mirror answers started.

I hope you can get a sense of how serious I am here.

The fact is that many €˜Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minute Specialist€™ ARE NOT CERTIFIED HYPNOTHERAPISTS. They are simply using the technology and power of Hypnosis to help you quit.

Now this might not matter to you. After all, hypnosis can be such a powerful tool that if you learn how to use it you could most definitely help anyone quit smoking.

But the way I see it is if you're going to pay someone HUNDREDS of dollars to quit smoking, wouldn'€™t you rather see an Actual Certified Specialist Hypnotherapist?

The choice is yours. I just want to give you the FACTS!

I'€™m not telling you all this as some sort of scare tactic to get you to come and see me. I'€™m telling you this to help prevent you from falling for some clever marketing, paying hundreds of dollars only to get a substandard experience which will then taint your entire opinion of Hypnotherapy, and that would be disappointing.

Here are some tips to prevent this from happening to you:

  • Be sure to ask your therapist what their qualifications are.
  • Find out if they are a certified Hypnotherapist.
  • Ask them how many years they have been in business and how many clients they have seen.
  • Ask them specifically HOW they have calculated their success rate.
  • Ask them about the pre and post session support structures they have in place to help ensure you REMAIN a non-smoker.
  • Ask about their follow up process.
  • Ask about any '€˜fine print'€™, hidden terms and conditions that would make your back up session null and void.

These are all questions that I personally welcome with open arms because of my confidence in who I am, what I do and the results I get for my clients.

The QuitWithNick Guarantee

As you can probably tell by now, I'€™m pretty committed to helping you get a positive result. Achieving this result requires 4 specific elements to be in place.

1)     You have to be committed to becoming a non-smoker.

2)     A method, technique and system that eliminates the urge for a cigarette and actually makes you FEEL significantly different, in control and confident to make the decision not to smoke..

3)     Committing to the decision NOT to smoke if you’re experiencing element number 2.

4)     A comprehensive pre and post session support structure to help prevent relapse.

The QuitWithNick Program incorporates and addresses ALL of the above elements.

Different smokers will have different definitions of ‘Success’ when it comes to quitting cigarettes. Here's how I define it;

Since smoking cigarettes is more of a HABIT than a drug addiction to nicotine (proven by the fact that patches don’t work every single time) and since studies have shown it takes 3 weeks to break a habit, then if you have gone 3 weeks or more without a cigarette

Your long term success is then up to you and your commitment to remain a non-smoker when you inevitably come face to face with a situation you could use as an excuse to smoke (usually stress or alcohol).

My Lifetime Guarantee means that if you ever start smoking again any time in the future, no matter when that is, you have one back up session to knock it on the head for good. Obviously no therapist, including me, can guarantee that you'€™ll never decide to smoke again, but I can guarantee that I'€™ll see you again €“ no questions asked.

My Success Rate

How do I know my success rate is 94.7%? Because I follow up with every single one of my clients by call, email and personal text message.

That'€™s right, ALL QuitWithNick clients are contacted firstly within 7-10 days after your session and then again at around the 3 week mark. I'€™m going to do the exact opposite to what all 'Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minute Specialists'€™ are trained to do, which is to never contact you again.

I know my success rate because out of the 1000+ clients I have seen since 2008, 94.7% have personally told me 3 weeks after their session that they feel a SIGNIFICANT DEGREE of confidence to remain a non-smoker for life.

And for the 26.9% of clients who have used their second session, over 95% of these people freely admitted that what brought them back to cigarettes wasn'€™t an urge or craving, but a decision to smoke.

The QuitWithNick post session support system has been created (and is continually being added to and refined) to empower you to continue to make the right decision no matter what old triggers and excuses you may come across in your lifetime.

This includes ALL clients automatically becoming part of my personal community as well as my 'Members Only' Facebook online support group so we can easily stay in touch for years to come.
